Finding the Limits of Hypothermic Oxygenated Perfusion

Abstract: Despite ISHLT registry data demonstrating consistent, excellent long term outcomes from heart transplantation (HTx) in advanced heart failure patients, there has been only relatively modest expansion in transplant numbers. Limitations to growth include not only donor numbers but the approach to safe donor heart preservation. For over 50 years of cardiac transplantation, static cold storage (SCS) preservation of donor hearts has been standard but resulting in substantial limitations on ischemic time and thus procurement distance.
