Beyond the bench: CCRG Open Day 2025
The Critical Care Research Group (CCRG) is a world-leader in biomedical engineering and patient-focused research translation.
From preclinical bench top models to computational fluid dynamics, in silico anatomical model to haemodynamic testing, CCRG’s research has led to major recent innovations in heart transplantation and mechanical respiratory support.
At this exclusive behind-the-scenes tour, visitors will step inside two of CCRG’s internationally renowned labs, the STARLab and ICETLab, to discover what it takes to drive research translation, improve outcomes and save lives.
Visitors will see the CCRG’s mock cardiovascular circulatory loop in action, hear from international intensivists and Post-Doctoral researchers, and see how coagulation, inflammation and other life-sustaining therapies are tested.
Tours and research presentations will be tailored for different audiences - please pick your preferred time:
Tour One - 10.00am - Undergraduate science, engineering or medicine students, members of the general public.
Tour Two - 11.00am - Students looking to undertake HDR study in biomedical engineering, basic science, data science and coding including algorithm development, or clinicians looking to undertake further research.

About the CCRG
Headquartered at The Prince Charles Hospital, Chermside, CCRG is pathing the way to improved care for critically ill patients. Our clinician-driven research aims to close gaps in current knowledge, improve practice outcomes to aid clinical decision-making and patient management, resulting in improved levels of care, treatment outcomes and reduced healthcare costs.
We are driven to improving our understanding of the many issues that face critically ill patients and finding new and revolutionising existing treatment methods for hard-to-treat diseases. Through our research, we aim to improve survival rates and quality of life for patients with life-threatening conditions, such as heart disease, lung disease, sepsis and other critical conditions.
STARLab
The Scientific and Translational Research Laboratory (STARLab) focuses on heart, lungs and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) research. In particular, projects involve heart transplant (HTx), lung transplant, heart failure, and Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS). STARLab specialises in large preclinical models using a variety of research methods and approaches, with all research designed for quick translation into clinical trials.
ICETLab
CCRG's Innovative Cardiovascular Engineering and Technology Laboratory (ICETLab) works to facilitate the transition of innovative cardiovascular technologies from idea to clinical implementation, whilst also investigating the clinical challenges facing existing technology. ICETLab is home to the internationally renowned mock loop - a bench top model of the cardiovascular system used to trial new interventions and technologies before clinical application.
